Our Name

The origin of Synescope’s name comes from the words Synesthesia and Cinemascope.

Synesthesia, simply described as a “union of the senses,” is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sense (like sound), causes the activation of another unrelated sense (such as sight). This may, for instance, take the form of hearing the strum of a violin and suddenly seeing an explosion of colors and shapes before the eyes.

Cinemascope, is the original process for filming and projecting movies in widescreen format, which became a smash hit with audiences in the 1950s and brought viewers back to theaters following the rise of television. The reason for its success can be attributed to the fact that humans actually see their world in widescreen.

That’s why when a film is seen in Cinemascope or any modern widescreen format, the image fills the viewer’s entire field of vision and makes them feel as though they are right there with the characters on-screen.

With the name ‘Synescope’ we pay tribute to the triumphs of cinema and the visceral connection between audiences and the stories we tell.
